Particle Persistence After Final Cleaning in IOL Production: Why Standard Swabs Fail and How the HT1701 UltraSOLV Swab Succeeds Without Scratching

In high-volume IOL manufacturing, particles surviving the final ISO 7 swab-cleaning step continue to drive scrap at inspection and directly erode output. The process is clear: partial cleaning in a non-classified area after lens generation removes gross contaminants, followed by precision swab cleaning in ISO 7. Yet tightly adhered particles often remain visible at final inspection—leading to unavoidable scrap. During the cleaning step itself, operators must repeat until the surface appears clear or scrap the device when particles cannot be removed without damaging the lens.

Standard foam swabs frequently fail here for one of two reasons:

  1. They cannot dislodge tightly adhered particles at all (leaving them for inspection scrap).
  2. They only remove them by dragging across the lens surface—embedding fibers, creating micro-scratches, or leaving streaks on soft IOL materials (hydrophobic acrylics, silicone, etc.).

Common cleaning solutions (sterile saline, 1% Liquinox®, deionized water) loosen residues effectively, but without proper particle entrapment, contaminants redeposit or are pushed into the surface—worsening yield and increasing cost.

Foamtec HT1701 UltraSOLV Swab – Removes What Standard Swabs Can’t (Without Drag or Scratch Risk)

The HT1701 is purpose-built to overcome both failure modes:

  • Next-generation super-hydrophilic foam with variegated pore structure actively traps and holds tightly adhered particles inside the foam matrix—removing particles that standard uniform-pore foam swabs either leave behind or only dislodge by dragging across the lens.
  • Rapid, even solvent absorption (sterile saline, Liquinox, DI water) creates a lubricious cushion that minimizes shear forces and eliminates lateral drag.
  • Flexible tip + 6-inch handle delivers precise operator control in ISO 7 hoods/benches—ensuring thorough coverage without excessive force or incomplete cleaning.
  • ISO 10993 Biocompatibility Certification (tested and certified for bioburden, cytotoxicity, and pyrogenicity) ensures regulatory compliance for direct-contact medical device applications.
  • Ultra-low shedding (lot-tested LPC, Helmke drum, optical methods) prevents the swab from introducing new contaminants.

Process Impact

  • Removes stubborn particles standard swabs miss → fewer particles reach final inspection → reduced scrap and higher first-pass yield.
  • Eliminates drag → lower micro-abrasion defects → fewer latent failures (streaks, embedded fibers) post-coating or in downstream testing.
  • Reduces re-cleaning cycles → faster throughput and lower labor cost per lens.
  • Maintains soft IOL integrity → protects surface quality without compromising optical performance.

For IOL fabs battling particles at inspection, the HT1701 provides a direct upgrade to the ISO 7 swab step—removing what standard swabs cannot, without scratching the lens, and without changing solvents or workflow.

Foamtec’s complementary tools—PolyCHECK® for particle-source identification and MiraWIPE® LS for low-shed surface prep—can further eliminate upstream fiber/particle sources.
