Nasopharyngeal foam swabs and their ability to collect high volumes of mucus and saliva and release them into the transport medium with a high recovery rate are paramount in detecting bacterial and viral infections. The US FDA and CDC recommend polyurethane foam swabs for PCR detection of most respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), rhinoviruses and enteroviruses (Picornaviridae), influenza viruses (Orthomyxoviridae), parainfluenza, metapneumoviruses and respiratory syncytial viruses (Paramyxoviridae), coronaviruses (Coronaviridae) and bacterial infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumonia) and Streptococcus pyogenes (strep throat).
